Emergency/STAT CT refers to the computed tomography (CT) examination performed for patients with life-threatening and crucial conditions. CT is a rapid and high-quality imaging tool that is effective in the detection of several critical conditions. However, healthcare institutions may not always have radiologists and subspecialty radiologists on-site to interpret the CT results. Emergency/STAT CT reporting provides remote access to radiologists to analyze the CT images for timely interventions.
There are several subcategories studied under emergency/STAT CT studies, as explained below:
This is the most common field where emergency CT is performed. Emergency complications that could arise in the neuroradiological system are injury to the skull, accumulation of blood in the brain, swelling, and reduced or blocked blood delivery to the blood. Emergency neurological CTs are helpful in the identification of these signs in the brain.
Emergency conditions that require chest CTs are typically trauma, embolisms, and heart strain. Such conditions require immediate treatment. Hence, they must be rapidly and accurately identified. Plain CT and CT pulmonary angiography are typically used in emergency/STAT situations. These are useful in the detection of pulmonary contusion, rib fractures, and embolisms.
Abdominal complications arising during emergencies consist of gastrointestinal and urinary system issues. Typical abdominal complaints that lead to an emergency CT examination are acute abdomen, renal colic, infection, abdominal pain, organ injury, etc. To diagnose the underlying conditions for these symptoms, specialized abdominal and pelvic CTs are performed.
In this section, the workflow performed during emergency/STAT conditions is explained.
